I've always wondered in games like Caylus and Troyes whether making it tedious but possible to keep track of individual players' VP creates an artificial skill barrier (more like a laziness barrier) between players.
Do you guys think you would have a strong advantage in Troyes if you actually counted VP diligently?

Not really, or at least not a strong enough advantage to justify the effort for most people.
Counting does provide an advantage, and paying enough attention to know roughly who is leading will certainly be better than having no idea. In a highly competitive game there is no reason not to count scores to the best of your ability.
But your best moves at any given point in time typically aren't dictated by the current score. There is also enough secret scoring after the game ends to make an exact count mid-game only partially useful.
Of course, the question then becomes: why is the current score for each player hidden if it's not a very important factor? So maybe I'm wrong.
