Where is this in the rules? I have looked through the rules and don't see this explicitly stated. If the rules actually says this than you have just answered your own question.
The closest ruling I see is
If you sent a monster (or ghost) it must attack if possible. Then
it is knocked out of battle for the rest of the Year. Place the
Monster (or Ghost) Tile in the Monster Lair face down.

but this would imply that regardless if the monster's attack is successful or not it is still knocked out.
Also the whole point of spells is it gives you something insanely difficult to deal with and if you didn't spy on them to prepare it is completely reasonable for one to cost you the battle.
