Well in fact I believe it is conscious design choice, for the simple fact that is a situation that surely happened very often during playtest.Also, the Event deck can also be stuffed with Mystery cards.
Another (and cheaper) way to prevent this information beforehand is to use shuffle blindly (e.g.: under the table), draw the first, and put another anonymous card (e.g.: a poker card) on top of the Event deck.
