I've never had a problem with the combat system in Prophecy.
We have fun working out the plus and minuses of everything BEFORE we roll the dice so we know the result instantly.

Never ever seen AP happen with movement before. Must be the players you played with.

Some things I agreed with are:
There is clutter. I devised transparent holders that I taped to the board with invisible tape and that helped keep things tidy.
Always play the short variant.
There are problems in appreciating when you may be strong enough to attack the guardians and then someone goes ahead and steals the win. But I do have the same issue in Mage Knights because I tend to be overly cautious.

Overall though I personally prefer Prophecy to any other adventure type game because it is an elegant streamlined game that allows me to build up a character and experience many adventures in a fraction of the time that many other games take.
