we played our first game last night (3p).
The rules about barbarians attacking a city say:
A barbarian attack follows normal combat rules except:
- the battle lasts only 1 round
- "Hits" are applied to units in the city if any. Once there are no more units to absorb hits, each hit reduces the size of the city by one step (by removing a city-piece). If reduced below size 1, the city is destroyed.
- if the city is reduced by one or more sizes, it becomes "angry"
- any surviving Barbarians end up in their settlement after the first round of battle
at one point in our game, due to an event card, the barbarians attacked a city where no armies were present. Instead of taking over the city, as would've happend when an opponent walked in, we played 1 round of combat and the barbarians rolled dice to inflict hits.
That's correct? Or was the city lost (and replaced by a barbarian settlement) as soon as they entered?

Hi Koen. You played it just right. You roll dice, add up hits, and remove a city-piece per hit. The barbarians them just end up back in their settlement :)
Have fun!
