The central board has a wheel which operates as a market to buy bricks of various different colours. As the wheel moves round, the bricks get cheaper. Most of the rest of the central board is a repository for buildings that you can buy with the bricks (1-5 of them). When you buy a building you add it to one of the 6 cities on your player tableau. Each city has a different multiplier, e.g. x2VP, x3 coins. The more powerful the city multiplier, the more restrictive the bricks that can be used to build there. The best city can only use white bricks, the worst can use any colour. As well as buying bricks or a building, the third option on your turn is to score points. You can score either all your buildings in one city (cost in stone x multiplier) or all your buildings of one type (e.g. castle, palazzo, library, port). You can score a max of 6 times during the game, and once a particular city has been scored by one player, no one else can score that city. At the end of the game there are various other bonus points.

All that is in the basic game and it's pretty light. The advanced game (included in the box) has several more bells and whistles including variable endgame triggers and bonus points for each game. Seems pretty interesting!
