Hi Paul. It seems inapropriate for me to argue with your observations or feelings and go through them point by point.
I do however think you may enjoy the game more on further plays. But, if the events concern you I suggest simply taking them out (as described in the rules) or play with the top card being open. Its a nice simple variant which in hindsight I ought to have included.
All the best Paul. I hope you will find it worth it to try it some more and come to terms with the game (with or without a variant). It would be a shame (and suprise actually :)) if a Civ-lover like you wouldn't enjoy the game in some form.
At any rate, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, and not just writing the game of.
Cheers

Thanks for your reply Christian. I do like almost everything about the game apart from the events/actions and will try the variant in my next game. The other thing that occurred to me to try would be to divide the actions into 'eras' - all actions are useful but it appears some are much more useful at the beginning of the game and some later - the trouble though is that an advance gained from 'Free advance' at the beginning can be used multiple times before say 'Leap of Knowledge' which works much better later in the game. I like the events and actions - I am just concerned about the game effect of when they come out. And I only voice these concerns because I want to love this game.
Hi Paul. Well, obviously I don't think its so needed that its worth the added complexity. My experience (and more importantly that of all the testing that has been done) is that it mostly evens out over the course of an entire game. I understand that this has not been your experience and I respect that, but maybe you have been more unlucky than normal.
I find that while some cards are better early than later, and vice versa, most always have good use when applied at the right time. :)
Regarding playing with the top event card open. Two things:
1) It complicates the game a bit by adding additional options that players need to think about. This can be a good thing and a bad thing depending on your point of view.
2) It adds another "take that" element to the game. However players can prepare for it most of the time but it does add more stuff to think about (point 1).
But to some players these two things may be problem free and preferable to the random nature of events. That's why I'm putting it out there. :)
Another idea is to maybe choose one from three action cards at the beginning and each status phase
Much simpler. I don't personally think its needed, but it wont break anything. So if that makes good to you then go for it! :)
