I love Chinatown, but it must be played with the right group of people.

There is a great deal of luck involved, and a reluctant or overly generous negotiator (I'm talk'n 'bout you ma!) can make the game insufferable.

Much of the value of things can be calculated leading to some AP, even though the card/tile draws are random.

I have had great success introducing this game to my colleagues at work. Highly recommended.

You hit the nail on the head, the right group of people. Some games are awesome others are so so depending on who is there. With this game I am selective about who I bring it out for.

As with most negotiation games, though, I think the right game player can make this a hit in any game setting (even with people who negotiate poorly). You just need to explain to those people their options, explain what they stand to gain or lose by making (or not making) a particular trade, etc. I find that, even if people are stink at negotiation games, having two good negotiators at the table (or one brutally honest game player who helps evaluate deals) can make this a success for any gaming crowd.
