I have had only one play of Longshot at a busy game group meeting and have not read the rules. I too noticed (like some other posters) that a $5 betting increment does not do this game justice. So with out reading much into it, or researching the consequences, and probably not a lot of chance to ever get it tested, I offer up a variant for your discussion.

What if you are allowed to bet $10 on a horse, but than you do not get to draw a card that turn.

What if you are allowed to make a $15 bet, but than you don't get to draw a card AND you lose your next turn.

I would anticipate lots of these bets happening when the lead horses are about 2/3 around the track.

Just tossing it out there.....

I think letting you only bet $5 is a key point in this game and makes your decision on what horse to bet on even more meaningful, do I go for the leader or maybe a "long shot". So IMHO, it works great the way it is and does not need any changes.
