The monk event puts a neutral meeple on the highest free (aka empty) space of the card rolled for, so it wouldn't have knocked you off.And of course, if you ever willingly remove one of your meeples from a card (to place them elsewhere) and want to put them back on, you simply pay the cost and activiate the card again to put a meeple back on it. Also remember, even though most cards only have 2 spots that give out points for being on a card, more than 2 players can be on a card. If the point spots are taken up, then the latecomers simply go on the card and won't receive points at the end. But every player can be on every card.
Edit: Also note that you do not need a guy on a card to use your cubes from that card (such as the cubes that let you modify dice). You only need a guy on the card to activate the card in the first place which lets you place the cubes. Once the cubes are on there, your meeple can be moved away, but you can still use those cubes. You will just have to put a meeple back on the card if you want to get more cubes.
