My high score so far in solo play is 186 and 178 respectively. In both games I used cows (without cow cards). Animals take some planning.
You have to make sure you leave spaces for the animals to go when they are slaughtered.
You have to slaughter them all.
If you plan ahead and know where they will go and how you will play them then you can easily turn them into massive points.
Taking Orkney immediately when available and filling it so you get a cow on that turn will help. Then buy a cow on the next turn, and boom you are in the cow business with an extra cow to boot each turn due to Orkney. Don't slaughter the pregnant cow, but don't worry about ever breeding them again. One breeding is enough.

My only issue with this is that the bonuses are collected after cows breed so you can never use the cow you just collected to breed. This means you're holding onto cows for longer periods of time and are getting your bonuses and income slower than if you just put them out on the board. I'm not saying it can't work (clearly those high scores are very very good) but I have no idea how you make it work, particularly in solo where you end up blocking spaces for the future round. I'd love to see a play session or at least a walkthrough of the first 3-4 rounds that you do as I've never been able to get much further than 150 with cows.
