I wonder if here "opening" does not necessarily mean all in the first round. It would be pretty tricky to build an academy in the first round (except the faction that has academies directly above their trading posts).


Standard 7 ore at the beginning of the first action phase, plus 1 starting qic, plus 1 from a booster (either as ore or qic). Build trading station (7o/12c). Build research lab (4o/7c). Grab the 1o1q tech tile (6o/7c). Build an academy (0o/1c). Over half the time (5 out of 9) the 1o1q tech tile is in a position where you can get additional ore or qics, and if you've positioned yourself well, you'll have gotten some good leech (sorry, Passive Action: Cycle Power) for an ore or credit power action, or simply convert staight to a needed resource.

An academy opening isn't difficult. It's really fun with Bal'Teks as they can get 3 tech tiles out of it. If done properly, with all movement in gaiaforming, they'll have 1 qic after building the academy and 3 more from their gaiaformers allowing them to take the tech tile qic action.
