What do you mean it takes away the need to exchange?

It's not that it's completely eliminated, but all scientists can contribute to cure a disease. For example, the Medic can characterize a disease (places 1 card in the lab--let's say red) and then the Researcher can test your cure (1 red card), and then the Operations Expert can come along and actually cure it (3 red cards). Like I said, you'll have to think a bit differently and it takes a few games. I think my wife and I got absolutely crushed the first 3 games we played with 4 Epidemic cards and nothing else. Just don't give up. It'll come.

Ah, I see. So finding the cure for a disease is more of a team effort and could happen slightly differently. Well, at least that way we could stick two cards into the lab and wait for another three to show up and then find the cure. Makes the game a bit easier in a way, at least for me. There is nothing more frustrating than being unable to trade a card because there is no time left.
