[o]So look - on the one hand, we're discussing strategies that are clearly (on the face of it) a wash because you and I ended up with nearly identical scores (I think we were 868 in the end).

But for us the logic was that building a radio tower was not a one-time deal....it was something we would use over and over. So I think that by June, we already had permanent towers in Denver & Cairo, in the same spots as our permanent research stations (and we built a yellow one not long after). We used them almost every month to move cards around - so each ended up being more like a 6 action + 12 cube saving....we thought justifiable for 3 VPs.
Basically our radio operator barely ever moved - or if he did only between our main 'bases' - where he'd spend his turns collecting and moving cubes and cards around, and doing some remote healing (using whatever that upgrade was called).

Also if some particularly nasty cards came out of Box 6....nothing to stop you tramping over there and putting them back in the box.

On a more general point.....I rather feel that the December game should be a challenge, and was glad that it was. Although as I say, second time we never ever felt we were remotely in danger of losing. Maybe we got some lucky draws and just didn't know it......[/o]

I do like the idea of receiving continuing returns from the permanent satellite tower. In hindsight I did wonder if it would have helped to use that upgrade once or twice. It does save an action and 2 cubes each month. And, having it there is useful for things that you might not do otherwise if you duidn't have a permanent one already in place - such as moving hollow men around when they're in the way.

I agree that December should be a challenge. My only minor gripe is that it's possible to be in a very difficult or impossible situation in December if you miss a couple of details - which happened to my team. SURE, in hindsight, it's obvious that it's crucial before December to get a shortest possible route from PEARL to to JADE, and a supply center in Johannesburg, but there were a lot of other important details too - those just happened to be two that we missed. And, those clues were given or revealed in the early months. In real time, it wasn't until a few weeks later that they actually became relevant, by which time we had forgotten that there was anything important to remember.

All in all, It's a great game and I would recommend it highly to anyone.

(Technically, we didn't really get the same score because my teammate and I lost, and only achieved our good score on a do-over reset at the beginning of December. But, I'm happy to see that with that shorter route, we were in fact in position to get the top scoring tier. :) )
