We didn't, we never used the researcher even once. I played the game 2-player with my girlfriend, and while the scientist was one of our most used characters, we felt that we needed other characters as well, especially in the beginning, when we used the medic a lot. Later on we found the operations expert provided great mobility, especially once the military bases or the vaccine factories came into play.
We lost three times (January, June and October) and scored 801 points. Our City Zero was Tokyo, the quarantine specialist was the traitor.
You don't need the Researcher in a 2 player game, where the cards are distributed across two hands. When they're distributed across 4 hands he comes in handy more.
