Thanks everyone for the responses. I didn't especially want the combo to NOT stack, as I think combos are good too and usually ambiguities are resolved in the players' favour. I just wanted to know if we were playing it right or not. So far it looks like the jury's out but leaning in favour of these two stacking.

As far as the Animal Trainer goes, however, the official rules are resolved heavily in the player's disfavour with respect to Dancer (and Juggler). Specifically, the official rules state that:
"A.Only the food that was lying on the action space can be used to buy animals. If you use e.g. the Juggler or Dancer, the additional food cannot be used.
B.Juggler and Dancer are used before you use the Animal Trainer to buy animals."
This strikes me as a very harsh ruling especially as Animal Trainer (unlike Magician and Dancer) is considered a weak card; in fact A and B almost contradict (if you use Dancer first you ought to be able to covert the 4 food into two pigs).

Not only that, but Storyteller effectively allows you to exchange a food for a vegetable and get the food back if you have Dancer. Animal Trainer has a far worse conversion rate and Dancer won't get you the food back!!

Anyway it would suggest that Magician+Dancer = 5 food and 1 grain, because if you apply Dancer before Animal Trainer you ought to be able to apply Dancer before Magician too.
