OK, an example I might give is, when I played Funkenschlag the first several times, I thought it was a great auction and economic game, but the whole track drawing element seemed more complex than necessary, the actual mechanics of track drawing didn't often influence the game outcome, and when it did it was because of debatable tactics like building extra track just to block other players. So it always seemed somewhat superfluous to me, and it seems I wasn't the only one, because when the game was redesigned as Power Grid, that mechanism went away.
