I think the different backs are a design decision (it could have been easy to make the cards with the same back, and divide them only with the front).

I had only one play (and it was really, really fun, even if disastrous for my castaway), and I don't know all the adventure cards. BUT, I don't feel the adventure cards on the event deck so un-thematic: my cook was injured and when I saw the adventure card coming up from the event deck I interpreted as if the cook was getting worse, and he had symptoms. The fun thing is that I had two adventure cards of the same type in the event deck, so I knew that something bad was going to happen but I wasn't sure about the card text. Tension!
And all the (few) adventure cards I read can be played thematically: a beast is coming (you see footprints), you're injured (your condition worsen), etc.
My 2 cents.

Anyway great, great game!
