I have been considering this as a fun alternative to drafting your army. I haven't been able to try it out yet but maybe others can give it a shot and give some feedback.- shuffle together any number of different armies into one facedown pile, randomly removing 4 tiles from each faction as you do it.
- take the top tile and place it facedown to make a new pile (pile A).
- make a pile B and C in the same way as A
- player 1 looks at the tile in pile A and decides whether he wants it or not. if he wants to keep it, he takes it and puts a new tile in pile A.
- if he doesn't want it, he adds a tile facedown to pile A and repeats with pile B. - if he gets through all three piles and wants none of them, he gets the top tile from the stack facedown.
- once player 1 receives his tile(s), whether by a pile or the top of the stack, then player 2 goes in the same manner as player 1.
I would suggest making 60 point armies if you mixed 2 factions of tiles, 80 points with 3 and 100 with 4+.
the interesting part of this format is not knowing half if not most of what your opponent has available to them. as you place your armies on the board, you have to use your knowledge of the armies to get an idea what the opponents' units could possibly be composed of.
during drafting, look for possible powerful combos that cross 2 or more factions.
any feedback from people who can give it a shot would be great.
