Paying any attention whatsoever to crops in the first two stages of the game (through round 7) is a waste of time unless you have card support or all of the actually worthwhile actions are gone. Your early actions are far too valuable to dedicate to getting plants in the ground, especially when you won't be seeing any net gains for another 5+ rounds (not until the second harvest after sowing).
