Hey JP,

I don't think you were "standoffish" during the rules explanation, not at all  Not sure how you interpreted that. On the other hand, I probably shouldn't have put words in your mouth regarding "looking for an excuse to find the game wasn't good enough". While I think that is generally a subtext in our collective gaming sessions, I was more directly speaking to an earlier conversation with the green player. I'll edit that bit.

Also, regarding losing, I didn't indicate that you were a sore loser at all. I did get the distinct impression that you and the green player weren't enamoured with how the game finished up. I've never seen you be a sore loser ever! :D

But I do have to disagree with this statement:

In this one, the only way to play well is to read your opponents and their circumstances well, and take an educated stab as to what they will choose - and should you choose poorly, the penalty is heavy.

This is definitely part of the game but not the overriding factor at all. If you can do this well, you will have an advantage however. Not the mention the penalty isn't that severe. I was the one bit by the aggressive action the most in our last game, and felt that I was in the running based on my strategy.

It's interesting that you balk at this mechanism when we just played one of your favorites Kingsburg, which has nearly the same exact mechanism in choosing what you want, but heavily considering what other players may take. To me, the effort in getting into another player's actions is far easier in Hornets, as there are only three options, while in Kingsburg there are many many more permutations of how a player can play their dice. Far more AP in Kingsburg.

Lastly, I wasn't aware that you dislike simultaneous role selection. That's unfortunate as I am discovering that I really like it, but I can't fault your tastes one bit. At least in Hornets, it's only one mechanism of many, and there are only 3 roles to worry about. Strategy of what hives you'll go for and how you will enact that strategy is far more important than role selection round by round. And for what it's worth, the reason I like simultaneous role selection is for the awesome meta game it creates!
