Hi all,I got Agricola for Christmas last year, and have been playing it avidly since then. I enjoy multiplayer games, but my gaming group is preferential to simpler, faster games (my fiancee and I are the only ones without kids, everyone else is really just looking to relax..). I play some 2er with my fiancee, but we don't really enjoy it, as blocking is a very powerful strategy, but usually leads to hurt feelings (well I didn't block you! Well you're hogging the wood! etc).
So 1er has become my format of preference. It has its limitations, but I really enjoy the challenge of milking every last point out of a given game, in-hopes of more starting food for the next game in the series.
I'm hoping that some of the folks at BGG can help me out of the rut I've gotten into with 1er games. I always try to max-out each 4-point category. It works consistently that if I max-out each one and grow to 5, I'll almost always make the target score. But it's gotten uncreative and a little boring.
What are some situations, cards and combos that make building more rooms a better play than maxing out all the 4 point farmyard categories? Are there any consist situations that make my approach sub-optimal? (For instance, when wood limited, it seems to be more cost-effective to built fences than stables. Sometimes. Lol)
What are some of the improvements and occupations I might be overlooking in-terms of game changing potential? I just tried the Food Critic for the first time, and found her hugely better than I expected, since her 6 available bonus points are 'extra' rather than just helping to max out the 4 points available in a given farmyard category.
Thanks for reading!
