I guess it's "adjacent" I am confused with, if you take the definition: Next to or adjoining something else.

However it doesn't look like people build right next to their house.

You're misunderstanding the rules here.

All the rooms in your house must be orthogonally adjacent to each other.
All your plowed fields must be orthogonally adjacent to each other. But they do not have to be orthogonally adjacent to your house.
Similarly, all your pastures must be orthogonally adjacent to each other. But they do not have to be orthogonally adjacent to your house.
