I'm pretty sure you are saying that you have experienced that a player who gets a lot of these Assistant cards becomes the runaway leader?Or maybe you just want to unclog the books of these Assistant cards in a 2 player game, because that can be a pain to one player just by chance?
Maybe this is obvious to you, and to some others, but it isn't obvious to me what the problem is here that this variant is addressing.
I have played the game, 2 player yes, and haven't seen an obvious problem with someone getting too many Assistants, even with a player getting 4 Assistants + Wild card. It winds up being a gift that turned out really was too good to be true. It's interesting to read other experiences.
