Dungeon Lords is not as tight or as unforgiving as Agricola.
Also it doesn't have infinitely many choices so you can't really "choose" yourself into a hole.

I disagree with this. To me DL is the tense game, where it matters if you miscalculate how evil you'll be, or you run out of food/gold, etc. Agricola never feels very tense to me. There's usually other options if someone takes the one you wanted. I don't think I've ever needed to take a begging card, and I don't really think anyone else ever has either in our sessions (even new players). I should mention that we only play the family version of the game (nothing to do with how tense the game is/gets, I just don't have the patience to wait for people to read and optimize the 14 cards)

In DL we've had new players lose their whole dungeon, ending with negative scores, people getting locked out of actions they really needed, or finding out they can't really do much anymore because you need gold or food for a lot of things. We've waited 15 plays or so to introduce the items expansion that was included in the base game, because we didn't think we'd need other people messing with our plans any more than they already were.
