Here are the actual rules:

Play just as in the Team Rules above except all Shadow cards have this additional effect, "Exchange one of your cards in play for one of your partner's cards in play."

This can be any card you have in play, including the Shadow card just played.

Exchange effects apply after Flip effects are applied when playing cards. In other words, the order of effects is: HUNT -> UNFLIP -> FLIP -> EXCHANGE.

I think that the following clarifications are useful:

1. The rule is triggered only by Shadow cards that were just played.

2. The rule does not apply to Shadow cards that were hunted.

3. The rule does not apply to Shadow cards that were flipped.

4. The rule allows exchange only of cards that have been played (not those in a player's hand or that were discarded at the end of previous stages).

5. The rule is not optional. If Shadow card is played and is neither hunted nor flipped, an exchange may be made.

6. If the rule applies to both players on team (because they both played Shadow cards), two exchanges occur. The two players determine to order in which to do the exchanges. The second exchange may undo the first. Since the players have different information (what is in their hands and what they have discarded), it may be a little tricky to do this without giving away more information to each other than the playing group deems appropriate. (The 4-player rules don't say how much information partners are allowed to exchange.)

7. If the rule applies to players on different teams (including cases in which it applies to 3 or 4 players), the players on the two teams work out how to order things with the same rigor that they apply to situations of simultaneous flipping. (In our group, if an "all flip" card is played, nobody ever tries to peek at what card another is flipping to decide which one he will flip.)
