Very interesting experience. Our son is 5, soon to be 6, and he started with "My first Carcassonne", but can now play the basic game. Yes, sometimes he loses focus, or gets bored, but generally speaking, he can finish a game.

We had a serious snafu (worthy of the name) in which our Legacy deck got shuffled. No one has owned up to the crime. Luckily we've a clear sighted 8-year old who resorted the deck for us.

We're currently on April. Can someone tell me how many cards are there in the March & April sections of the deck so I can make sure we haven't missed anything?

Questions about beginning April in particular:
[o]We opened April with the notice that our Epidemics were going to be increased to 7 cards (and we've the highest number of cards for 7! One more city and we're looking at 8?) Did we miss something to make this easier? Right now I think we're looking at a controlled loss for April.

We've reconed North America, South America, and Europe but haven't found any of the Lost Havens (which I know we need to do soon - so feel free to tell me that is the answer to our questions on how to avoid death and destruction.).[/o]

It is the answer.

Is that the new rulebook or the old one?
According to the new rules, as far as I know, the "+1 food" icon serves as it's own source of food. So if there is no food icon on the island tile, the "+1 food" token would create it's own source that you could gather.
In that case it is covered with a black marker just like the other sources.

Actually, the new rules state: "If either the <+food> or <+wood> token is on an Island tile, it produces 1 additional food or wood, but only if there is a corresponding source that has not been exhausted (covered with a marker)."

Maybe the +1 token worked as a source in the older rules, but in the new it is just a "source modifier".

I'd normally agree, but the text which Nguyen just posted (which is also from the new rulebook) seems to imply that for this particular card (New Flock), the +1 food token it places acts as its own source. I think that Mark's interpretation is correct.

For what it's worth, I'm currently playing Season Two with a group that's not tearing up things we've been told to destroy. In Season One with a different group, I'd bought the set and we did tear things up.

I miss that. Physically destroying components did add to the experience. /-8

Indeed!

I've been trying to refrain from talking about pbf1 since I'm not in it but it can be fun to chat about GP since the game is so fresh

Justin: You should spoiler-tag the last part of your comment.

Agreed: you cannot discard a card just because you want to, but there are loads of things you can choose to do within the game's rules which cause you to discard a card as part of their effect. If you really want a card to be discarded, you can use any method that your ingenuity comes up with, no matter how silly.

To pick a spoiler-free example, it would be entirely legal to make a charter flight from Atlanta to Washington by discarding Atlanta, even though you could have driven there. (I don't recall an official ruling, but by my reading of the rules I bet you could even discard Atlanta to fly from Atlanta to Atlanta!)

Spoilers for start of July:[o]In case you are wondering, there has been an official ruling that you can only discard relevant cards when making a Search. It's not an opportunity to get some unrelated card into your Rival's hand. (-8[/o]

There's also something else mentioned in the flavor cards that's very important, with significant hints on how/where to find it.

My kids were taught Carcassone at ages 5 and 7. It's a game they love, and one that we continue to play regularly. So (depending on the child) I think this can be an excellent game for young ones.

My biggest takeaway from this blog is an affirmation that the base game of Carcassonne simply doesn't compare well to some of the stand-alone expansions. A full "re-do" of the tile distributions and scoring mechanisms, like what you get from Hunters & Gatherers or Over Hill & Dale, seems much better than trying to gloss over problems by adding new features that extend the playing time.

I'm interested in other players' thoughts on how they think the math affects Carcassonne's balance.

I only find the monasteries to be swingy if you get them either (a) early or (b) late, but in a place where you only need to place 1-2 tiles.

If you keep the board relatively rectangular, a late monastery is time consuming to finish. If you try to work on one in too much traffic, it's entirely possible to get cut off / cut someone off, such as:

X–X–\--
X–M–O–}
X–X–|

In this, the (all-field) monastery is closed off on 7 of the 8 sides. To the northeast is a curved road leading away, two spaces to the east is an open city edge, and to the southeast is a road going north/south.

Since there is no tile FFCR (in the base game, anyway; I think at least one of the expansions may have it for one orientation, but it is still only about 50/50 to draw it in a 2P game), this should trap the monk in the monastery.

Even if you don't trap the monk, you can just put stuff to reduce the legal tiles around a monastery. Five monasteries aren't nearly so good if you can't complete any of them for half the game!

Indeed, wasn't thinking since OP mentioned the spoiler in the post. If he is still reading if he could update the thread title to say February spoilers, then I think it would be all clear.

We messed up Accelerated Incubation (AI) as well.
We had only lost January and had just sailed through May too, but it didn't feel right this time. I like to watch YouTube plays of the month(s) I've played to see others reactions, mess-ups, strategies, etc. This pointed out to me that we had messed up AI.

In this case, I felt that we could reset and replay may with the corrected rule, so we undid the endgame upgrades and removed the 2 city panic level increases that we received on the 'bad' play.

The correct May clobbered us! We did manage to win the 2nd time at May but with a huge struggle.

We are 2p and it wasn't too hard to undue May, so that our easy solution, but in other cases I could also suggest that players just note the mistake and move on even knowing you missed a scar, etc. You'd have to decide how strict you'll have to be. It's Legacy anyway, it's all goona change some more anyway and then you'll never play it...so just make the mistake part of the narrative, I could argue....

I couldn’t agree more. Flares are a threat. You can deliberately put yourself in such a position as to be likely to be able to flare next turn. You can wipe out your own pieces to enable a flare.

I thought of them as a cheap catch up mechanism when I first played, but then having started being more deliberate about them, I realised they add subtlety to the game which it would otherwise have sorely lacked.

I've done the "OK. I know how to play - Let's go!" thing with the wife about eight times now.

We sit down at the table.... and I need to go to check something.

Even having played Terra Mystica many times, there's still so many things to remember.

Hi guys, I have a question about this game. Can a single player spend his 2 actions to do 2 times the action of "create", "obtain resources" or "explore"? Putting 1 pawn each time and throwing the 3 dice twice. Thank you.

OK. I've got about 10 plays in on Terra Mystica over the past 5 years or so. I get to play about twice a year so it's not a game I feel I've mastered. In fact I'm just now starting to feel like I can play it without having to relearn the rules each time. It still feels fresh and fun to me.

Of course now that Gaia project is out I'm hearing a lot about how it's fired Terra Mystica for many people. So the question is... is there anyone who has played both games who still prefers Terra Mystica? Or is Gaia Project just objectively the better game?

If you like Terra Mystica better, then why? If you like Gaii project better, what are the biggest improvements?

Answer!!!!

hah sorry, but yes, you have the option of either sending both pawns for an auto success, stacking them one on top of the other. Or you can put them side by side and take the risk twice and roll the 3 dice as 2 separate actions.
