A simple question to ask is, "Will this card give me at least the equivalent of two actions over the course of the game or more victory points than some other action I could do now?"
Interesting spin on the word 'simple' for beginners, there. I don't think I can answer that in all situations, after 700 games down the drain.
What makes the game interesting is how it changes around you due to what other players do and what cards they play, so even experienced players still play cards and end up getting little or no benefit from them. Part of the learning process is getting a better grasp of which cards will be beneficial and what the risk is that you will never benefit from that benefit. The best way to learn is to make mistakes
Agricola is one of those games where you can try something completely different, it may fail, or it may not, but even if it fails you may learn something valuable about how the game works. For example advice for new players is usually avoid begging at all costs, but experimenting with taking a begging card or two can prove interesting. I have won a game having begged (without any specific cards to negate it) but my last game was one of my worst in ages, having begged and it all went horribly wrong. Begging is a valid option, but you are on a knife edge, not recommended for beginers :D
