You can change the three endgame conditions by picking or randomising between a set of different objectives for each. There's also a bonus scoring card that can vary from game to game. They shake the game up quite a lot and make it so you're concentrating on different things. One of the big changes from the base game to the advanced is quite a simple one: you can choose not to rotate the resource wheel before buying goods from it. It gives you more control over the pricing of goods and how cheap you make them for opponents.
The base game is quite simple, pleasant enough but not much there to merit many plays. The advanced game offers many more options and is somewhat mind-boggling at first. I can see why it was split into the basic and advanced versions.
