Thanks for the numbers, Steve! I guess it's too hard to distinguish "convert resources for VPs" advancements of digging? I'd suspect especially CMs to do that with leftover priests as by round 6 they'll be on 9 or 10 in most cults anyway, or so far behind that two priests won't help.
That was the 5-minute answer I threw together before bed last night. The fully nuanced answer would require updating all my scripts to handle the turn-level information that Juho has added recently(-ish) to the game summaries, which I don't have time to do right now. But as a 15min answer: we can split the advanced-digging factions between those that did a manual dig on or after the round in which they advanced digging for a 2nd time and those that didn't; this doesn't *necessarily* mean they did a 1w dig, but it should correlate pretty strongly. And based on that:
FactionDig GamesDug AfterNo Dig
halflings1131130
alchemists59590
swarmlings54486
dwarves12120
chaosmagicians65596
witches63621
cultists39363
auren330
mermaids13121
engineers972
nomads550
giants101
We find that almost all of the times digging was advanced, people dug afterwards. Swarmlings and CMs (and Engineers) have a few more points-only upgrades, but its the significant minority even for those factions. Most people are advancing digging to dig.
The numbers add up to 596 games - I presume some of the expected (1+2+4+8)*7*6 = 630 games didn't make it into the calculation? E.g. games with dropped players?
Yeah, I drop games where the data is "dirty" to avoid skewing stats. Usually that means drops, but there's a few other situations that have historically arisen that can also cause it to happen - not sure if any can happen in the tournament.
50% for the Swarmlings (ahead of Dwarves!) really surprises me, as does the missing 1 game for Halflings. :p What was that Halflings player thinking? I bet he/she lost big time...
Link to game withheld to protect the guilty, but I will confirm that it did not go at all well, and they did indeed lose.
Separate observation: 500 out of 596 games with Darklings, another 67 with Alchemists: so a whopping 29 games = 4.9% were played with out a black faction. :sauron:
If you include the games with drops and stuff, the count is 30 out of 630 (as I alluded to here).
