Regarding house rules for 2p, I reckon that the designers closely followed the discussions about the perceived shortcomings of 2p TM, and had a long hard look at the proposed improvements/variants/house rules (like e.g. smaller map, cult+scoring dummies). They then integrated the solutions they liked into GP.So when comparing the 2p experience between TM and GP, I consider it unfair to compare the two games "out of the box". The fair 2p comparison should be between "your favored house-ruled 2p variant of TM" and "your favored house-ruled 2p variant of GP" (even if you didn't find it necessary to house-rule GP).
