We played this 6-player last night, but I wonder now if we did something wrong.

I seem to remember a sentence in the rules saying at the start of the round, players can use their abilities or play knowledge cards.

Now, this brings up two points:

1. I guess that isn't actually one OR the other, and is just wording ?

2. Can you only play Knowledge cards at the start of the round ?
