What's the worst that could happen, though--you can't make it worse!
I was just going to use a black Sharpie; the silver pen is a great idea. (Elmer's--and probably also other companies--also makes white paint markers which might work.)
If you do use a ruler, stick a few layers of masking tape to the underside so that your straight edge is raised off the surface of the tile a bit. Otherwise, capillary action can suck thin inks or paints under the ruler & across the surface of your tile, which will provide a disappointing answer to my "what's the worst that can happen" question.
EDIT: that probably didn't make any damn sense--and I sure don't want to be responsible for someone applying tape in the wrong place--so here's a highly technical drawing of what I'm talking about.
I suppose alternatively one could use a steel ruler with a cork backing which is designed for this very purpose - prevent wicking as well as preventing slipping of he ruler along the surface.
I want to try this but only as a last resort.
I have it in mind to try trimming a roll of coloured labeling tape (which is less adhesive than regular tape so no worries if I don't like the look) to size , and applying the trimmed tape to the tile edges.
If I ever get around to this project I'll post some pics.
