There are circumstances, particularly Stage 3 spades, when it is useful to partially terraform a tile to not quite your home terrain. Since all unoccupied hexes can be gazumped by rivals, partially terraforming is recommended for hexes adjacent only to you.

This seems to be the last thing that we were playing wrong. Other errors we made in our first game were:

(a) Forgetting to take an oval reward after building a temple or sanctuary.

(b) Forgetting to take purple power tokens when a neighbour built or upgraded.

(c) Forgetting to take towns.

(d) Forgetting to play sensibly. For example, I used my Alchemist race power to such a great extent that I started the final turn with fewer victory points than I started the first turn. :p
