What you are ignoring is that language (and especially english) follows 'common usage'. And in most people's minds 'niggardly' is in the same category of words as 'gyped', 'welshed', and 'jewed'. As such it should be avoided in polite company - there's no point showing that you are both erudite and insensitive.
That being said, the Tales of the Arabian Nights is full of actions and stereotypes that can be offensive to many, and you need to be sure the players are aware of this as well as the observers. There are many instances of rape that could be just as offensive.
