ok, played our 1st game this afternoon, and do have a few questions:
- i read here (BGG) that you never discard the sentry unless entire house is cleaned out...so, even if i beat/defeat him and take the lowest treasure he remains in place? and if i proceed we flip a new guard (with the orig sentry still just sitting there?)...we put the defeated guard/sentry in the discard pile and pulled a new one...is that wrong?

That sounds right. If you clear all the guards/treasure, then you discard all defeated guards including the sentry. If you don't clear the house (either because you lost or you chose to stop), then you discard all the defeated guards except for the sentry, who remains at that house.

If you cannot defeat a guard (elite or otherwise), you don't play a card. Just take your 1 treasure, discard all non-sentry guards, add a new treasure to the house... and hang your head in shame.

It's possible to win the game on the backs of rumor cards. The rumor cards that give points for having rumor cards are particularly powerful...
Before a scoring round, you want to set it up that you are first in some house colors and second in others. For the houses you're second in, you want to make them worth enough points that if the player who is first in that color takes the points, you'll get approximately that many points from a rumor card, and if he chooses the rumor card, you'll get the points - e.g. win-win situation.
But when a really valuable rumor comes up (like one you already have 2 of), you might want to cash in treasure for it directly - before somebody else does!

No, the elite guard is discarded like all other non-sentry guards. Only the original sentry stays - and you add a new treasure to the hosue. The next time somebody tries for that red treasure, they'll flip a new (unknown) elite guard.
