Hi Christian,

I notice that the Objectives Cards are hidden. From previous experience, I'm little wary of games which have too much emphasis on secret objectives.

It makes effective strategizing and gauging your relative position very difficult. IMO it often leads to the annoying "'Surprise!' I just did a supercombo of 3 Objectives in a late-game turn and now I'm suddenly in the lead" syndrome. [Especially when the only benefit of the object is Victory Points rather than economic/military/research benefits which usually more beneficial the sooner you can resolve them.]

So I was wondering if you could explain your reason for hidden objectives rather than open objectives? And how much of end game VPs normally come from these objectives?

Cheers,

Robert.

Hi Robert.

I have good news, and bad news.

The bad news is that I actually like that people have secret objectives and that they can surprise me. So it is a conscious design choice which is based simply on preference. You see all other points are open (City pieces (1 vp per city piece), Advances (½ a pt. each), Wonders etc), so having some secret objectives gives it some uncertainty (which I like). I would say about 1/3rd of the points come from these objectives. However they are scored throughout the game, so it’s not like at the end of the game you increase your score by 30%.

The good news is that you could easily, and without breaking anything, either play with open objectives, ditch objectives or play with them on the board for all to attempt. I will stress though, that I would not recommend doing anything like that to begin with, but simply say that the secret objectives ought not to worry you too much, and if you find them problematic you have loads of simple options to implement.

Thanks for your interest!
