I used the Geeklist to compare sizes so that would be surprising, honestly.

I have both in front of me. They're the same size.

In the sleeves geeklist, if you check the comments for the Sylvion entry you'll see a few mentions that Mayday Chimera are a better fit than European. I have both games sleeved with Chimera sized sleeves and they're a great fit, while European would be entirely too big. No idea why Sylvion is officially listed as European, but check the comments for the full picture. I've posted a comment on the Sylvion item to see if Adam cares to weigh on on the reasoning.

I know some people are of the opinion that it's not a "proper" Mega game unless at least one copy of each expansion is included. With the number of expansions available nowadays, I can't imagine there can be *that* many people who own them all in order to play a Mega game, let alone anyone who can resolve all conceivable rules interactions/ clashes!

With this in mind, my personal take on it is that a game becomes a Mega game once it's gone beyond the normal realm of adding one or two expansions to add a bit of interest, and you're deliberately embarking on something that you know is going to end up looking quite wonderful (after many hours of play when you get your table back).

In terms of meeples, most of the major expansions add some kind of new special meeple which all adds to your available options. Especially Abbey & Mayor with gives you THREE new bits of wood (as well as the abbeys) that can be used to generate points in different ways and keep your score ticking over. If you end up with trapped meeples going to waste, there can be lots of ways of getting them back depending on which expansions you include but might include via Dragon, via Princess, via Tower kidnap, via Siege, via Corn Circle or via Festival. In short, trapped meeples aren't such a problem when you have so many expansions, so we don't normally adjust our meeple allowance beyond what we'd normally be entitled to when we go big.

But most importantly of all, if it's fair and everyone is enjoying themselves then you're doing it right!

Alright, this resolves all the doubts. I must have missed this underscored part. I still think though that this additional explanation is confusing :P

That's just some random person. The post two below the one you quoted says the same thing I just said.

Regardless, go back and reread the rules. Taking an advanced tech tile allows you to take a tech advance. If you take the advanced tech tile from the fourth level of a tech track (which is legal) then the tech advance can be on the same track, pushing you into the fifth spot. You'd have to have two federation tokens to flip in order to do it though, one to take the advanced tech tile and one to advance to the fifth spot.

Yes, I just saw this post and corrected my comment there -- you're absolutely right. Mea culpa.

I've only played the first four so far.

I think "The Flagships" and "The Hourglasses" are both the kind of expansions you could easily mix and match with others as neither take the game in radical new directions.

"The Stoneclouds" was good but I'm not sure whether I would want to mix it in with others (besides "The Flagships") as the larger you make the decks, the less often you will draw multiple hammer birds together which will make it much harder.

This expansion is interesting because you want to leave the hammer birds in the display until you've got at least two (ideally three) to use at once but the more you leave them, the less cards you have available to you for your regular objectives.

"The Piers" was quite good. It's tempting to grab those workers to get three re-rolls for picking up the regular cards but I suspect you're are going to probably want to use them mainly for rolling five of a kind to get those piers. You've also got to be careful you don't leave it too late to pay them off!

After getting in a play of the solo game, and getting my ass handed to me, I now see why you only have to score a single point to win. It's more luck than skill in the end, but still fun and challenging.

Anyone have any success beating the solo mode yet? If so, what strategies did you try to employ?

Here's a photo of the most recent Carcassonne game we played to the last tile. I believe this is a base set, River, River II, Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, Princess & Dragon, Tower, 2 copies of Abbey & Mayor, Catapult, Cult & Siege, King & Scout, Messengers, and a couple mini-expansions. The only expansion we own but didn't use here was the Count of Carcassonne.

We put all the tiles in a single bag and use a form of Richard Garfield's variant to determine how long of a game we want to play. See this post for a brief explanation.

according to german rulebook, you are allowed to use the determination tokens you get from the failed success die for a re-roll right away, but only for re-rolling the wound die or the adventure die. the success die is locked as soon as you take those tokens.

The rulebook appears to me to say don't put silver on boards already taken, but then just 2 lines later says do place silver on boards already claimed. I'm learning from the Rulebook and I am also a bit confused by this.

PAGE 8:

"place 2 silver on each unclaimed exploration board not being turned. Exploration boards that players have already taken do not receive silver."

"Place silver on the other exploration boards even if the exploration board that is supposed to be turned has already been claimed by a player."

I'm waiting to get my copy, have ordered it from Germany (can't get it in Sweden) and looking forward to play it.

Nice to hear it's coming more nice stuff to my favorite game.

Thanks for taking the time to explain Sébastien. I'm always thrilled to hear about your new projects. I'm sure that whatever you and Xavier have in store for Ginkgopolis and your other projects, they will not disappoint! I try to follow Pearl Games closely; your recent games have been 'insta-buys'. Solenia was my first game seen and purchased at Essen '18 and Black Angel is already on preorder at my FLGS.

Thank you for your continuous excellent work for the board gaming community.

I think I will just do it like this:

Have a display of 4 occupationcards face up that people can chose from, or draw random.
Also when you update mpuntainstrip 1 card goes awayand another comes in.

Great assessment. And Gernot's comments on the images are worth reading. I've been waiting for someone with more knowledge to break these down for me.

I think the huts you say are weaker, are really just more situational and pigeonhole your early strategy a bit more. They work, but like you say, they could be more difficult in multiplayer if someone blocks a crucial step in the perfect setup of that hut.

I agree with your thematic critique of animals in artisan huts not breeding, but there's a lot of thematic blurring in AFFO and getting hung up on one detail doesn't really help anything. Also, if they could breed after being placed, why wouldn't they also score points? If they scored points that would throw off the balance of the animal huts, especially the Barn. Same with the Whaling Hut; why can't we use the boat that's parked at the hut named after the action it could be helping? Presumably it's off fishing instead of whaling (because the bonus), which makes the name of the hut odd. Or perhaps the boat is turned upside down and used as the roof of the hut, hah. It's easier just to say: Placed tiles are no longer considered to be those things. They become a representation of the amount of work that went into filling those empty areas in your society. (The only exception is the English Crown, which is worth points at the end of the game even after placed.)

This is saying, for instance, if the "C" island has been taken, and it's time for the "C" island to flip, you would place silver on the other still-available islands.

It doesn't mean put silver on islands in a player's possession.

Waouw, thanks to you Tom :meeple: And yes, play Solenia, it's maybe as good as Ginkgopolis (not the good post to say that :D ) !
