It's that time of year again when all gamers of the world flock together to the largest games fair of the world: Spiel Essen! Publishers and retailers show their wares and demo their newest games. Artists and designers answer questions and sign your copy of the game, and many interviews are done by the BoardGameGeek crew. Well-known game reviewers such as the crew from the Dice Tower and Rahdo Runs Through can be spotted amongst the crowd, and you might even be lucky enough to shake hands or get your picture taken together. And so, after having visited the fair last year for one day, and deciding that one day wasn't nearly enough to take it all in, we went for two days this year.

Day 1: Friday okt 9th 2015

On friday we went with 2 cars, together with my friends Hans (who drove), Paul & Brigit and Guido. My goal was to network as much as possible. I'm planning on starting my own games webshop, so I made some businesscards, and went about handing them to game companies, and asking them where I could order their games from.

One of the first stands I visited was the Plaid Hat Games booth in Hall 3 where I talked to Jerry Hawthorne, designer of Mice & Mystics, a great and beautiful cooperative fantasy game. He was also promoting their newer awesome games: Tail Feathers, Ashes, Dead of Winter and Specter Ops.

We had been in contact a few times over at Ye Olde Inn, talking about HeroQuest and Mice & Mystics, and he told me he was coming to Essen, so I had to come and say Hi, and I handed him a pack of stroopwafels that I had brought along as a gift. People from outside the Netherlands seem to enjoy them greatly. He tweeted that the PHG crew loved them :D

Then I headed for Hall 7, to pick up my copy of Ancient Terrible Things plus expansion The Lost Charter. I had backed it on Kickstarter, and later that day the designer Rob van Zyl would be there to sign your box. I also met the crew from The Dice Tower, and I just had to take a picture with them. I love their reviews. They certainly deserved some stroopwafels, so I gave Tom Vasel a pack to share, and he had to laugh because he had heard people telling him that the Dutch were so cheap, but they kept sharing food with them. It was a fun moment! Tom: Dutch people may be frugal and economical, but they would happily share with others!

I also brought a pack of stroopwafels for Stephen Buonocore from Stronghold Games to thank them, because I was a lucky winner of a copy of Space Cadets: Away Missions with all the Kickstarter stretch goals and extra's, including a set of 6 painted heroes! We had a nice chat, and then I moved on to the Artipia booth in Hall 1 to pick up another game I had backed in Kickstarter called Project: Elite.

A closer look at the miniatures. People had complained about the lack of detail, because Drawlab had promised high quality miniatures with lots of detail, and these didn't quite live up to that. And I had to agree after seeing these up close. But Artipia and Drawlab have recently posted an update on the Kickstarter page that they would replace ALL the miniatures with high quality models. Amazing! Hats off to you guys!

My friend Corina was helping out at the booth, and after a little chat, I picked up my boxes. They were HUGE. So Corina told me to go and see her boyfriend Rindert, also a friend of mine, at the Portal booth to see if he could find a place for me to unload all those games for a while. Fortunately, Rindert was able to let me dump my boxes in his car in the garage under the Messe, so that I could continue unburdened. Thanks guys!

Then I went to the math trade, which was crazy, but everything went smoothly, and I traded some great games. I got the Kickstarter edition of Dungeon Roll, Monkey Mission and Heroica Fortaan for our son, two out of printexpansions for the classic D&D fantasy boardgame from the early 2000's that are impossibly hard to find. There I bumped into Richard Ham, aka Rahdo, who does game runthroughs, explaining how a game works, and then playing it on Youtube. He's a very friendly guy, bumping fists with anyone who wanted to say "hi!". He was so tired from lugging all those games, he needed a shoulder to rest.

Then it was time to go and have my copy of Ancient Terrible Things signed, so I went to the Feuerland booth where Rob van Zyl was kind enough to draw me a cool doodle in my box lid.

We had a nice chat, talked about my plans to open up a boardgames webshop, and I also got a card signed for my friend Corina. Their company name is Pleasant Company Games, and Rob certainly did that name justice.

Then I moved on to Sandy Petersen's stand, where they were selling and demoing his amazing game Cthulhu Wars. His sons Arthur and Lincoln were there, as well as his wife, and all of them were very friendly and welcoming. I had backed their previous games Orcs Must Die the boardgame and Dicenstein, and for both I tried to bring in more backers by blogging about the games, and for Dicenstein I created some microbadges on BoardGameGeek to help promote the game. Both projects were successfull on Kickstarter, and Arthur thanked me for the help.

He showed me the Dicenstein prototype dice, and those looked fantastic! It was great to talk to them about their games, and of course I brought more Stroopwafels. I also had a nice chat with their German friend Fabian Küchler, who talked to me about his yearly roleplaying event where a lot of Cthulhu themed games were played, and Sandy Petersen himself also attends. I got to roll a die to win a miniature figure from the game, and I got me a nice Hunting Horror mini! :D

The rest of the day I spent visiting booths and networking with publishers. I also got some cool litho's signed by game designers and artists, to put up on my game room's wall. I talked to Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau, designers of Pandemic Legacy, and I met Eric Lang the designer of Blood Rage, Naïade who does great art for lots of games, and many more.

Time flew by, and at the end of the day, I was exhausted, and all my business cards were given away, so it was a good time to go home. I picked up my stuff from Rindert's car, met up with my friends, and we walked to the garage where our friend Hans had parked the car. As we got in, one of the rear doors didn't lock, and a light kept blinking on the dashboard. Hans got out and tried to close it, but all attempts failed. He had just recently got the car from his work, a Peugeot 308, and it was brand new, so this was quite strange. He called the number for road assistance, and though the booklet stated help would be there in half an hour, the person on the phone told us it would take an hour and a half for a mechanic to arrive. Big sigh. After having waited for 2 hours, no mechanic had shown up, se Hans called again. They told us the mechanic had come, but hadn't seen any cars with a Dutch license plate, and se he went home again. His excuse was that he wasn't able to call a foreign number on the phone. Apparently, he wasn't clever enough to simply call his own central and relay the message. Angrily, we told them we had seen no mechanic at all, and we were standing by the main road, so we would certainly have seen a road assistance car. They'd send the mechanic back asap, and it would now take another half hour. An hour later we were so tired from waiting for three and a half hours now, that we just got in, and drove home. We simply needed to hold the door from the inside. We got home okay, but we all decided never to buy a Peugeot ever. Worst customer service ever.

Day 2: sundag okt 11th 2015

On sunday my wife also came along, and Guido and his girlfriend Moniek also joined. This time I drove, and my trusty Ford Focus Wagon did not let us down. It also has plenty of space for games in the back! I had more time to look around and try out games, and my wife wanted to have a look at the Haba stand, to see if we could find a fun game for our almost 3 year old son.

We tried out several games, but our favourites were Feuerdrachen and Obstgarten. We decided to buy the latter, as the first is a game we felt was a bit too advanced for a 3 year old. Maybe next year :)
I took some more pictures of games in play, and we also tried a game of Celestia, which looked nice, but was sold out. We met up with Rindert & Corina, who were having a day off, and we had lunch together.

Guido and Moniek played a game of Rush & Bash, a racing game reminiscent of Wacky Races and Mario Kart, and my wife and I went by the Japanime booth to check the prices on Krosmaster Quest.

They were heavily discounting their games in order to empty the booth, so we ended up with Krosmaster Quest, the Frigost expansion for Arena, two character boxes (Multiman and Dark Heroes), a box full of single figure blind boxes and a playmat. The nice lady also tried to sell me this resin board, and I loved it, but it was a bit over my budget...

We went back to Guido and Moniek, who decided they'd buy Rush & Bash, and I tried to fit all those boxes into my suitcase and bags. The many hours of playing Tetris in my childhood finally paid off.

After visiting all the halls and taking our time to see what new stuff there was to see (we tried a game of Curse of the Black Dice too, and saw people playing a very interesting looking game of Heroes), I went back to the Petersen Games booth to see if they had sold out their Cthulhu Wars games yet. They had about 10 boxes left, and I decided to pick up two signed copies for my webstore.

Sandy was kind enough to also sell me his demo copy for a steal, and he also signed the box for me. I am thrilled to finally have a copy of my own! I will definately be demoing that at my game club. The boxes are about 5kg each, so lugging three boxes back to the car along with all my Krosmaster games was quite the workout for my wife and myself. But Guido and Moniek kindly offered a hand, and without any car trouble we headed back to Maastricht.

It had been a fantastic two days at Spiel Essen, the biggest games fair in the world. If you've never been there, I highly recommend it. I only hope they'll have more English versions of games available in the coming years, as a lot of (mostly older) games are only available in German. New games are generally available in English though, so make sure you read up on what's new on BGG before you plan your trip!

But the rule on page six reads ...

"The fleet may sail past hexes where it does not have a trading post, whether the hex contains no circles, empty circles, or circles filled by another nation's train posts."

No where does the rule on page 6 implies that the hexes you are adding to determine your revenue do not have to be in a contiguous line. It only clearly outlines the rules around range (a radius) and not counting hexes over the black lines.

Granted, the example does mention "on the way", but then this seems to then be a case where the rules certainly don't specify that idea of continuous spaces explicitly enough. That's bit of a mis-step. Adding a single word or two in the rules on page six would have prevented this misunderstanding.

We'll go with the example then, doomturtle. Thanks for your help!

Essen után két nappal Anduril? :) Csak sikerült belekóstolnunk egy kis újdonságba (sponsored by HB). :)

Itt is újabb lapok (indiánok) beszerzésével (szövetségével) juthatunk több aktiválható lehetőséghez.

Ezeken a lapokon pontok, kis rajzocskák, sátrak találhatók.

Nekem tetszik.

A többiek azonban eléggé ráfeküdtek a kézművesekre.

(Megjegyzés: a Five Tribes jelenleg a 35. a BGG ranglistán...

A Blueprints-be azonnal beleszerettem, amikor megláttam. Nehéz racionálisan megmagyarázni, hogy miért. Nekem nagyon tetszik a megjelenése, a kis illusztrációk, a doboz, a kártyákon az alaprajzok és persze a kockák (na ezek olyanok, amiket jó kézbe venni). Az alapkoncepció is nagyon szimpatikus, egyszerű, rövid, szórakoztató építkezés zajlik mindenkinél a saját paravánja mögött (csalókkal ne játsszunk ilyet (SE!!!)).

3 fordulóból áll a teljes játszma, mindegyikben ugyanaz történik.

Viszont most is elérkeztünk az ár kérdéshez. Agricola All Creatures Big and Small), és a Blueprints sem a filléres kategóriában indul.

We played our third game on October 13th.

Start of the Game

Received: Structure - Military Bases
Received: Action - Military Shuttle Flight
Received: New Character - Operations Expert
Received: Funded Event Card - Remote Outpost
Received: New Scar Stickers

Objectives 1 (Mandatory): Discover cures to the 3 normal diseases.
Objectives 2: Eradicate 1 disease.
Objectives 3: Have a military base in each of the six major regions.

Used Win Bonus earned in February to quarantine Beijing

Players & Characters

Yong: Kira (Dispatcher)
Min: Shu Nay Nay (Quarantine Specialist)
Nam: South Virus (Researcher)
We had a difficult time deciding which characters to choose this game. Apart from the Quarantine Specialist which we found to be essential, we were torn between the previous characters and the newly acquired Operations Expert.

We decided to focus on the 2nd objective (eradicating a disease) rather than the other one(have a miliary base in all 6 regions) since the latter seemed to be more difficult. For this reason, we we ended up with the same characters as the last game. The co-worker relationship between Quarantine Specialist and Researcher seemed more valuable than the abilities of the Operations Expert.

Funded Event Cards (0 cards)
Since we won the last two games, we had no funded event cards this game!

Major Events

For most of the game, it was similar to the last game. Shu Nay Nay (Quarantine Specialist) put quarantine markers on cities with the COdA-403 cubes and those close to outbreak while I, the Researcher was busy passing cards to my comrades using my abilities.

Using the relationship abilities and character abilities, it was a breeze curing the first two diseases and it looked like this was going to be another easy game.. or so we thought.

Cured: Princess Disease (Yellow)
Cured: Nam Virus (Black)

But then, on our 3rd Epidemic, we drew 2 infection cards with cities containing the COdA-403 cubes, which resulted in 2 outbreaks.

At this point, we still had to eradicate the Min Virus (Black) and cure the last normal disease (Blue) in order to win.

But the problem was that we only had two COdA-403 cubes left!!

There were 2 more turns left until Shu Nay Nay(Quarantine Specialist)’s turn who had 4 blue cards and needed 1 more blue card to cure the last disease. Also, there were 3 spaces with black cubes that had to be treated in order to eradicate the Min Virus (Black) - the 2nd objective.

So, within those two turns, we had to pass a blue card to Shu Nay Nay, eradicate the Min Virus (Black) while hoping we don’t run out out of COdA-403 cubes.

My(Researcher)’s turn: Move one space, treat a black space, move again and treat another space. One more black space left to treat in order to eradicate.

Draw infection cards: Fortunately, no red cards.

Kira(Dispatcher)’s turn: Place a Quarantine marker on a red space. Move to where I am. Move again to cure the last black space.

Eradicated: Min Virus (Black)
2nd Objective Cleared
Draw infection cards: Red card appears..!! BUT on a city with a Quarantine marker xD

Shu Nay Nay(Quarantine Specialist)’s turn: Use Co-worker ability to receive the last blue card from me(Researcher). Cure Nam Virus (Blue) right away since it doesn’t need a research station (positive mutation upgrade).

Cured: Nam Virus (Blue)
WIN

End of the Game

Result: WIN!
Win Bonus: At the start of the game of April, add 1 military base anywhere on the board.
Wow.. what a game. Never thought it was going to be one with such a nail-biting ending. It was funny since we thought we were easily going win this game for most of the game until that COdA outbreak. Never be so arrogant - lesson learned.

Diseases
• 2 Cured: Princess Disease (Yellow), Nam Virus (Blue)
• 1 Eradicated: Min Virus (Black)
• 1 Incurable: Yong Virus (Red)

Epidemics & Outbreaks
• 3 Epidemics
• 4 Outbreaks

Game End Upgrades
Positive Mutation: Efficient to Sequence on Min Virus (Black) - no longer need to spend an action to Discover a Cure for this disease

<div>In the Lab brings way more complexity for an eased up win condition (having five cards of the same color on hand is an issue).</div>

Well it seems to have worked for me using paypal. I am only concerned about how they take your street address with the house number after the street. I am sure they will address it this way and hopefully the good old US Post office will not get confused.

Hi,

Each room : any room can only be activated 3 times each round (whatever the hero ).

One hero activates a room with 3 dice and then moves out, another moves in and activates it again with 3 dice and, finally another does the exact same thing?

So the room was actived 6 times ! Limit of 3 / round.

Promethium Tank (Room II)

You must choose, when activated, one (and only one) side of the room.
Whatever the side you choose, per round, the team is authorized to active this room with 3 dices max.

I try to show you, with different setup, that some side of the room you can used (depending of the symbol : melee or ranged).

Cundco now says they are having issues with foreign paypal payments.

If that is you, choose "Paid In Advance" you can send them money directly via Paypal with your order number in the payment. Good thing I did the Paid In Advance part already.

<div>First three player game. Base game is surprisingly easy when you've only been doing it with two so far.</div>

I agree with David that the rules as written on page 6 isn't at all that clear. Thank you, DoomTurtle for your clear response.

I hope this can be added to the FAQ.

I'm also wondering the same.

I don't own regular pandemic, and i'm not interested in re-playing the legacy version of the game after I play it.

I am curious if after a full play through of the legacy campaign if I can either 1) play regular pandemic or 2) play some other version of pandemic that I've created, or is the game simply basically "disposable" once the campaign is finished? (i'm not complaining if it is - just wondering-as I already own the game and have yet to embark on the campaign)

For instance Risk Legacy specifically says in its description:

It should be noted that although cards are ripped up over the course of the game, there are so many cards added via the sealed packages, that the game does not suffer. Nor is this a "disposable" game, merely a customized one. The game can continue to change beyond the 15 game campaign, and even when it finally does stop changing, you still have a copy of Risk that is completely unique, and plays better than any other version of Risk.

Is the "end game state" in Pandemic Legacy different than in Risk Legacy?

Just make sure you don't tear up cards that it tells you to destroy. Put the cards away for safe keeping. When you are done with your playthrough, you should be able to ignore the stickers you added to your board and cards to play a regular game of pandemic.

The meeples in the base game are all 16mm. The big guys from Inns & Cathedrals are 19mm.

First off the disclaimer: I haven't opened any of the sealed components, so I'm not an authority.

That said, I think it would be playable. If you wanted to go back to the basic rules, you'd have to ignore all the stickers that have been placed (and there will be plenty unless you haven't followed the instructions), but I don't think that would be hard. The main thing you're missing from the normal Pandemic set is the wide variety of roles and alternate ways of playing that come in the expansions.

The rules do specify that you should rip up character cards when/if they become "lost". Personally I consider defacing the card sufficient and intend to write something like "Died October 15th, 2015" across the portrait, which would then still allow you to use the character for basic Pandemic.

The game does include a mechanism where cities that have an outbreak of disease increase the "Panic Level" and there's no going back. The final version of the game could be played with the panic effects that are on the board, but it seems like it would be a little weird to have the panic effects without the potential for them to increase... yet if you keep increasing the panic level the game would clearly become unplayable at some point.

Although I wouldn't be too surprised if at the bottom of the "Legacy Deck" (which you go through in order as you play the campaign) is a rule change that solves that problem and keeps the customized version of the game playable repeatedly. If not, presumably there will be a Season 2...

Edit: Ah, forgot about that Dice Tower review... I suspect it's the Panic mechanism he's talking about when he says it's unplayable at the end. I would expect basic Pandemic to still be possible.

That would be my guess too because if you destroy nothing that should be and ignore anything that's added after you start playing the first game you still have the same game after the campaign. So you probably can play it as basic pandemic, but do you want to?

Will try this variant some day soon!
Might be fun for me, since the girlfriend never wants to play this with only 2 players.

Thanks for all the hard work put into this Project :)

As I sayed I have not yet played it but the dice tower review (can't access youtube from here so no link) suggests that it's unplayable after the legacy campaign if it is played as per rules.

Jason wrote in another thread that what they meant is that unlike Risk Legacy where you could buy another box and start it again with only small spoilers, they think Pandemic Legacy would be unplayable as a campaign (at least until you forgot most of the plot).

However if you want base game pandemic afterwards make sure you don't destroy all of the characters cards when they are lost (same with other core cards if that happens).
