The Knowledge track can be very powerful. I usually set myself up to gain 4 knowledge a turn,The amount of steps this takes on the knowledge track will vary between race and strategy.

My goto tech tile is the charge 4pw action. Makes you less reliant on passive charges, gives you an action to delay with if your trying to wait out a specific round booster etc.

The problem with the knoledge-track (and what most player dont realize at first sight) is that it never help you increase your knowledge income. It is only to score more victory points or the get the 9 income-boost in one of the last two rounds when you reach last step.
Let me explain why: Even if you research knoledge very early in the game each step will give you a maximum of 5 knolledge during the whole game (in case you make that step in the first round). Since it normaly costs 4 knoledge to advance this step (or one tech-upgrades wich equals this) you only earn 1 knowledge by making this step and youll recieve that earning 5 rounds later in the game. So, research steps made in round 2 give you same knoledge you did spend back and research steps made in round 3 or later give you even less knowledge back than you spend. If you keep that in mind you will find yourselph researching on that track in much fewer situations even if you want to go heavy in research/knowledge.
