I agree with the above.

The very first game may feel very much like vanilla Pandemic, with slight tweaks (ability to freely choose your starting characters from the whole available pool of five, new scar rules and city instability rules), but that will change before you're even out of January. The way things go, it should feel fresh to you even if vanilla Pandemic is getting stale.

In practice, opening RL+TS+2M seems to be the standard opening for HH with A+M being a strong contender if you can get to level 4 economy right away especially if scoring for PI/A occurs in R1.

I think this is the right move, especially R1 Acad. Level 4 econ is huge and it sets you up for 3-4k a turn to go up other tracks afterwards. Using those resources, you build up PI in R2/3 and now you can do anything

I was going through the rules yesterday and there's something I'm unclear about. Can you, when using a trading boat to acquire a basic good (wood from Norway for example), upgrade that same resource using your vehicles during that same labor season or do you have to wait til next labor season? Thanks.

You would have to wait until the next season to upgrade any newly-acquired resources.

Loading a vehicle (required, of course, for resource upgrades) is an anytime action that may take place during Phase 2: Work Phase (FoA rules, 7). The "Trading Ship Special Ability", however, takes place before emptying one's vehicles during Phase 3: Inventorying (T&T rules, 5). This means that by the time trading occurs, one is already in the Inventorying phase, at which point is too late to load a vehicle for upgrading during that season.

Just to compare the income from the two openings. I would use the RL+TS+2M getting 1 level in science track and ideally the ore+1pwr tile. With the Academy open I ideally get 1c+1k tile and the ore+1pwr tile.

R2 Income
RL+TS+2M+ore+pwr tech + level 2 economy level 1 science (requires round bonus for additional science R1 or R2 Needs the terraform power action or terraform tech tile)
O:4+C:8+K:3+PWR:3

A+M+1c+1k tech + level 4 economy (Requires 2 ore from power and ore from round bonus)
O:5+C:8 K:4 PWR:5

Of course there are variations on both of these, but we can see that the Academy opener is slightly better R1. That all said, it is hard to say whether the RL+TS+2M opening into Academy R2 is stronger than the Academy opening into TS+M R2. both opening wind up in approximately the same position they just take slightly different routes. The main advantage of the RL+TS+2M opening is that the opening only requires 9 ore and it uses the starting QIC to expand instead of as ore for the Academy.

Truth! Or taking that power action that you needed. I often see people talking about how you can just use a power action to get some more of x, but what if someone else uses it first? Or, I remember in another thread, someone was calculating the value of the different Academies for Xenos, based on the idea that they could take the Tech Tile QIC action x number of times... but what if someone else takes it? This should obviously be borne in mind, when discussing "standard" practices in GP.

In reality, you are cut off from the actions that you want far less often than people act like you are or will be. Sure you should be realistic, but being super pessimistic will equally lose you the game as well. People think they are cut off a lot because it feels bad when it happens.

It's good to calculate an expected value within reason to try and optimize play. 1 power action or 1 qic action is reasonable. same with a boost. but if you start requiring multiple things, then it's more situational

also you need to evaluate how flexible your strategy can be if you do get cut off. pivoting can be key and that's where experience comes in

In a 4p game, where everybody tries to achieve the -supposedly "standard"- openings of AC+M or RL+TS+2M or RL+4M, some of them may find that there aren't enough round boosters with ore or QIC in the game, that only one of them can take the 2ore power action and that other players like to colonize Gaia Planets too.

At least GP has enough standard tech tiles for everybody, and everybody can get 2ore/1QIC from Terraforming/Navigation/AI level 1, regardless of whether he's first or not.

I can't imagine playing the gleens without 1 bump in GF. It seems like a complete waste to me not to.. Getting to lvl 3 in GF may be even better but I tend to go up economy or nav heavy instead.
Indeed, a faction whose ability is "gain VP from Gaia Planet colonization" should aim at colonizing Gaia Planets, and there aren't enough around at the start to satisfy their appetite (though the initial ones are great too as Gleens don't need a QIC, just an ore).

EXACTLY! It blows my mind that people think the GF track takes too much investment. It's practically free, if you replaced the track with "gain 1 free "full terraform" (like the sandstorm or giants ability) per turn starting the turn after you get this" would anyone question how awesome it is? Sure you have to manage power.. but I think that's a good trade.

It's partly this mindset that makes people feel that terrans are OP.

Doc, do you go heavy in GF track with gleens or do you just get one bump?

Great, thank you. Being able to initiate combat with a Whale card changes things dramatically so I wanted to make sure I wasn't just interpreting the rules in my favor. ;P

My last game I achieved almost 200 points.
I starred with PI, moved gaiaforming one step, started gaia project for 6 pwr and additionally burned 2 pwr so I gained 2 tech tiles in 2 round. On round 2 further advanced in gaiaforming track, so another 2 tech tiles was mine.
I ended game with all base tech tiles plus 2 advanced tiles.
One of the end game goals was most gaia planets.

I feel like my biggest worry would be economy, if I pursued a strategy like this. But, then, you could get the 4c tech tile and all your Gaiaformed mines will give you some ore..... Interesting idea.

I've played Pandemic Legacy both with people new to Pandemic (one never played at all, two had played once on the Legacy board before beginning the Legacy game) and this has not been a problem at all. The most important thing is to have people you want to play the same game with 12-24 times AND who can commit to playing the same game 12-24 times in under a year.
